Gerard Piqué spoke to the media after tonight's international friendly at Saint Denis where Spain overcame France (0-2) and the Barcelona player defended the use of VAR system (Video Assistant Referee). "Match officials can make mistakes but this system will help. Initially it's a distraction due to the stoppage time but it's improving and I have no doubt that it will get better. How many times have we suffered due to decisions and all we could do was complain. Going forward with this system that shouldn't happen any more".

The defender also took time to take berate Real Madrid when asked about legal cases involving his team-mates Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. "I've nothing against Real Madrid players but there are other things about the club that I don't like. It wrangles with me to see the individual who is involved with the indictment of Messi and Neymar sitting in the VIP section of the Santaigo Bernabeu stadium." Piqué was referring to the current state attorney Marta Silva Lapuerta who is a Bernabeu regular and was a member of the Real Madrid board during Florentino Pérez's first reign as Real Madrid president. "It's always been like that at Madrid he added, cases against Messi, Neymar...and nothing for Cristiano. Same as always...", he added.

No retirement u-turn

Piqué also confirmed of his earlier stated intention to call time on his international career after next summers Russia World Cup. "It's well thought through and with no u-turn he claimed adding "assuming that we qualify for the tournament which is ongoing".

The 30 year old player also made a point which contradicted Real Madrid legend Raul's claim that he wouldn't close the door on any club: Pique added: "I don't doubt Raúl's love for Madrid but I could never work for Real Madrid".

The parting comment for the player was in defence of his team-mate Leo Messi claiming: "I'm no-one to question a FIFA verdict but I see a four game ban as excessive" referring to the sanction handed out to the Argentine captain earlier on Tuesday.
