Real Madrid are interested in signing Benjamin Mendy from Monaco should their approach for Theo Hernández be repelled. The club have a very strong core of players but there is still a need to touch up different positions in an effort to improve the overall quality and depth of Zindedine Zidane's side. That is why the club have set about singing Benjamin Mendy, the 22-year-old left-back. Marcelo currently lays claim to that position but he has no natural sucessor and with all signs pointing towards Fabio Coentrao's departure from the Santiago Bernabeú in the summer, Real Madrid need cover.

Why Real Madrid have returned to Mendy

The main objective is to convince Atletico Madrid to sell Theo Hernández, their left-back currently on loan at Alavés, but there are several teams in for the French defender. Barcelona are very keen on the 19-year-old and because of that, Real Madrid have dusted off Mendy's file and started to consider him as an option.

Real Madrid have been following Mendy for quite some time and with the chance to watch the 22-year-old in the semi-final and possibly the final of the Champions League, los Blancos will have a definitive idea of what they are getting themselves into should they go all out for the young defender. Monaco are fighting with PSG, and to a lesser extent, Nice for the Ligue 1 title and the club are aware that there could be an exodus this summer with everyone watching Leonardo Jardim's sides' progress.
