Hope Solo takes swipe at Messi and Neymar over tax cases

The former US keeper, a vocal advocate of pay equality in men's and women's football, used her new Eurosport slot to aim a jibe at the two Barça stars.

Former USA goalkeeper Hope Solo caused a stir in her debut as Eurosport’s new Commissioner for Women’s Football, an incendiary position created by the broadcaster and which features Eric Cantona as Solo’s counterpart.

Asking herself whether there were any players who could be likened to Barcelona forwards Leo Messi and Neymar, Solo, who is a campaigner for equal pay for the men's and women's US national teams, replied: “I have never even heard of any woman player who has enough money to even think about tax evasion.”

The 35-year-old also made a reference to her infamous outburst after USA were knocked out of the 2016 Olympics by Sweden, a team she dubbed “a bunch of cowards.”

That comment earned Solo a six-month suspension by the USNWT, which also cancelled her contract with the national team. Solo is currently sidelined after undergoing shoulder surgery last September and it remains to be seen if she will earn a recall.

She also poked fun at Jean-Michel Aulas’ public pursuit of Alex Morgan, saying Twitter is “the new Tinder” for the Lyon president.
