Barcelona have reacted to the impeding departures of youth team products Jordi Mboula and Eric García by handing a new three-year contract to Carles Aleñá, considered to be the great white hope of La Masia. In a statement issued this afternoon, Barça explained that Aleñá will remain at the club until 2022 and see his buy-out clause raised to 75 million euros. The promising young defender is also expected to listed in the first team squad for the new season.

Barcelona to hand Aleñá a more prominent role

Aleñá was handed his first team debut by Luis Enrique in last year's Copa del Rey first leg meeting with Hércules (which he celebrated with a goal in the 1-1 draw). After Jordi Mboula left to join Monaco on a five-year deal last week and Eric García due to complete his move to Manchester City, it would have been disastrous had Aleñá been allowed to either leave or fester in the B team.
