Arsenal-Chelsea: Community Shield 2017, goals, summary

Arsenal defeated Chelsea for the second time at Wembley this summer to lift the Community Shield on Sunday, winning the game in a penalty shoot-out after the sides were locked at 1-1 after the 90 minutes.

Álvaro Morata and Thibaut Courtois missed from the spot as Arsenal buried all four of their efforts to claim the first silverware of the season and although the Spain striker, who started on the bench for Antonio Conte’s side, will be remembered chiefly for clipping the woodwork with his penalty, his contribution will be overshadowed by the Chelsea keeper’s decision to take one himself with better equipped players available to test Petr Cech’s reflexes.

Courtois looked confident enough as he swapped the sticks for the spot but skied a woeful effort high, piling more pressure on Morata as he stepped up with the competition this season trialling the ABBA system of penalty taking – one for one side followed by two for the other.

Morata might have ended the contest in normal time but guided a late header just wide of Cech’s upright, the only positive in an otherwise low-key cameo from the bench with a little over quarter of an hour to play. Michy Batshuayi, who will expect to be behind Morata in the pecking order, was the more incisive of Chelsea’s strikers but failed to turn good movement into anything tangible.

One of last season’s revelations at Stamford Bridge, Victor Moses, opened the scoring in the first minute of the second half when he stole in behind a napping Arsenal back line to convert Gary Cahill’s looping header. In a first half characterized by loose possession and tentative forays forward there were few clear-cut chances although Arsenal’s record signing Alexandre Lacazette struck a post with a fine curling effort while Pedro stung Cech’s gloves at the other end.

It was a forced substitution that turned the game in Arsenal’s favour, free summer signing Sead Kolasinac making an instant impact after he replaced the stricken Per Mertesacker, who was on the receiving end of a solid if unintentional elbow in the face from Cahill. The Bosnian displayed plenty of power and direct running in his Arsenal debut and scored the equaliser with a fine header from a free-kick delivered in the immediate aftermath of Pedro receiving a red card for a studs-up challenge from behind on Mohamed Elneny, one of Arsenal’s best players on the day.

Both sides went at the game in the second period after a first half that had more than a hint of a pre-season friendly about it and chances were carved out at both ends, Courtois pulling off a splendid, sprawling save from Granit Xhaka.

But the Belgium keeper’s heroics did not translate to the business of putting the ball in the net and combined with Morata’s costly miss ultimately handed the trophy to Arsenal, who were confirmed as champions when substitute Olivier Giroud stroked home the winning penalty.
