Chelsea leave Diego Costa out of Champions League squad

Antonio Conte has omitted the AWOL Spain striker from his European list of 24, opening the door for Costa to feature for Atlético in the latter stages.

Update:
Chelsea leave Diego Costa out of Champions League squad

Diego Costa has been left out of Chelsea’s Champions League squad for the 2017-18 season, paving the way for the Spain striker to feature for Atlético Madrid in the knock-out stages assuming he completes his protracted move back to his former club in January.

Chelsea, who have been drawn in the same group as Diego Simeone’s side, took the decision to omit Costa from the list of 24 players for European competition but have included him in the club’s Premier League squad for the season. Antonio Conte has made it abundantly clear that he does not want Costa to remain at the club but as no deal with Atlético was reached before the transfer window closed he remains under contract at Stamford Bridge for now.

It is expected that Costa will return to London from his self-imposed exile in Brazil in the next few days to smooth over his relationship with Conte with a view to securing his move back to his former club when Atlético’s transfer embargo is lifted in January. It remains unclear if Costa will feature for Chelsea in the interim.
