Roma 0-0 Atletico Madrid: match report

AS Roma clung on a for a 0-0 draw at home to Atletico Madrid in their opening Champions League group-stage game thanks to a string of fine saves from goalkeeper Alisson on Tuesday.

The Serie A side were also indebted to a superb goal-line clearance by Kostas Manolas from Koke, immediately followed by another Alisson save, in the first half of the Group C game.

The Serie A side have a dismal recent record in the Champions League and Tuesday's result extended their winless run in the competition, including qualifying matches, to seven games.

Alisson saved his best for stoppage time when he dived low to his left to block Saul Iniguez's downward header and the Atletico player then fired the rebound over from point-blank range.

It's back.... The Champions League group stage for the 2017/18 season kicks off again tonight and what a clash to start off proceedings as AS Roma welcome Cholo Simeone and his Atleti side to the Italian capital.

AS Roma

Roma look set to be without Emerson and new acquisition Patrik Schick but look set to start Alessandro Florenzi for the first time in 12 months.

The Giallorossi had no Serie A game last weekend with the game in Genoa against Sampdoria postponed due to storm warnings. Coach Di Francesco had mixed views about how this cancellation affected his side's preparation for the Champions League debut stating: "It might be a bonus in terms of our preparation for the Atleti game, but who knows when we’re going have to catch up with that game in the league. Any advantage is relative. Lots of the Atletico players didn’t play in their last game against Valencia, so many of their starting eleven will have been able to get a rest.",

Diego Simeone welcomes back Antoine Griezmann, who has been suspended for the last two LaLiga games. A 0-0 draw against Valencia last time out might see the Argentinian change things up with his attack with Griezmann likely to replace Luciano Vietto.

Diego Godin understands how important a victory is and with Chelsea in the same group, this could be a key game. “We know how important the first match is and it is key,” Godin says as Atletico look to get off to a winning start in a competition they have been in the final of twice in the last four years.
