Roma 0-0 Atletico Madrid: match report

AS Roma clung on a for a 0-0 draw at home to Atletico Madrid in their opening Champions League group-stage game thanks to a string of fine saves from goalkeeper Alisson on Tuesday.

The Serie A side were also indebted to a superb goal-line clearance by Kostas Manolas from Koke, immediately followed by another Alisson save, in the first half of the Group C game.

The Serie A side have a dismal recent record in the Champions League and Tuesday's result extended their winless run in the competition, including qualifying matches, to seven games.

Alisson saved his best for stoppage time when he dived low to his left to block Saul Iniguez's downward header and the Atletico player then fired the rebound over from point-blank range.

Teams heading out of the tunnel! Getting close to our first Champions League action of the season...

Atletico left it late to head to the stadium and they had to make a dash through Rome to make it on time.

Just his second start in the Champions League but has started to feature more prominently in recent weeks for Simeone.

The only team to play more games in the last four Champions Leagues than Atletico is Real Madrid. Atleti have played 48 and Real Madrid 51.

Diego Simeone, as a player, faced Roma 12 times. He won six of them, drew two and lost four.

Atletico have only lost three of their last 24 Champions League group games. The Simeone effect.

Ready for action!
Strong bench!

Roma XI: Alisson; Bruno Peres, Manolas, Jesus, Kolarov; Nainggolan, De Rossi, Strootman; Defrel, Dzeko, Perotti

The big debate heading into the game was whether Vietto or Correa would be dropped for Griezmann. A massive sign that vietto is working his way back into Simeone's plans.

Atletico starting XI: Oblak, Juanfran, Savic, Godin, Filipe Luis, Saul, Thomas, Gabi, Koke, Griezmann, Vietto.

Team news is rolling in..

Monchi says that Atletico are the toughtest team to be playing, ""We are confident going into the competition and we will try to advance as far as we can. Atletico Madrid is one of the worst opponents to face, at the same level as Real. Above all, if we really want to move ahead we will face the best teams. Griezmann is a danger, he is one of the world's best players. From Atletico I would take each and every player, Griezmann who I mentioned, then Koke, Saul, Godin, Carrasco. The team is the best at translating the coach's instructions into the game. Chelsea are tremendously complicated, but Atletico for experience and consistency is very hard. And Cholo doesn't love the pressure of being favorites. They are an example for me after leaving a complicated situation, I hope to be able to reach the goals they have."

Simeone seems to be going all out for the Champions League this year. He rested a bunch of players on Saturday against Valencia. Godin, Gimenez and others will be fresh tonight in Italy.

Saul hasn't been in the greatest form to start the season but Atleti hoping he can recapture last year's form to help them towards another decent run in the Champions League. Not a bad start last year.
Here's a reminder of Atleti's squad for the match against Roma.
Edin Dzeko will be the man Atlético have to watch in the Stadio Olimpico.
Will the Frenchman find the old onion bag tonight? Word round the office campfire is a 0-0.

Roma vs Atletico Madrid live stream online: UCL match preview

It's back.... The Champions League group stage for the 2017/18 season kicks off again tonight and what a clash to start off proceedings as AS Roma welcome Cholo Simeone and his Atleti side to the Italian capital.

AS Roma

Roma look set to be without Emerson and new acquisition Patrik Schick but look set to start Alessandro Florenzi for the first time in 12 months.

The Giallorossi had no Serie A game last weekend with the game in Genoa against Sampdoria postponed due to storm warnings. Coach Di Francesco had mixed views about how this cancellation affected his side's preparation for the Champions League debut stating: "It might be a bonus in terms of our preparation for the Atleti game, but who knows when we’re going have to catch up with that game in the league. Any advantage is relative. Lots of the Atletico players didn’t play in their last game against Valencia, so many of their starting eleven will have been able to get a rest.",

Atletico de Madrid

Diego Simeone welcomes back Antoine Griezmann, who has been suspended for the last two LaLiga games. A 0-0 draw against Valencia last time out might see the Argentinian change things up with his attack with Griezmann likely to replace Luciano Vietto.

Diego Godin understands how important a victory is and with Chelsea in the same group, this could be a key game. “We know how important the first match is and it is key,” Godin says as Atletico look to get off to a winning start in a competition they have been in the final of twice in the last four years.
