ATLÉTICO DE MADRID

Atlético de Madrid losing patience with Yannick Carrasco

The relationship between player and club has deteriorated. Atleti turned down a request from the winger to return to Belgium to recover from a knee injury.

Aside from recent results and the plausible possibility of being eliminated from the Champions League, one of the other issues concerning Atlético Madrid at the moment is Yannick Carrasco's situation. High-ranking officials at the club are not happy with the Belgium international, who has missed the team's last four games with problems to his left knee arising from a bout of patellar tendinitis or jumpers knee.

Carrasco's slow walk off-field angers Atlético bosses

As Cadena SER recently reported, tensions between club and player came to a head during the Champions League Matchday 3 meeting with Qarabag in Baku. Carrasco and Kevin Gameiro were  taken off on 71 minutes in a double substitution and replaced by Ángel Correa and Fernando Torres as Simeone looked to win the match with a late goal and the score locked at 0-0. But instead of making the substitution as quickly as possible, Carrasco took his time, slowly ambling off the pitch with the clock running down. In the dressing room and back at the Wanda Metropolitano offices, he was reprimanded for his attitude. According to Carrasco, he felt he should never have played the game due to his problems with his knee.

The situation hasn't been helped by the fact that the player had put in a request to return home to Belgium to recover from his knee problems but that petition fell on deaf ears at Atlético.
