Hugo Broos sacked as Cameroon coach

Hugo Broos was on Tuesday sacked as manager of Cameroon, less than a year after guiding the country to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title.

A poor performance at the Confederations Cup in Russia and the failure to qualify for the World Cup were the reasons for the 65-year-old's dismissal, said the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) in a statement.

The ‘Indomitable Lions’ finished third in their Russia 2018 qualifying group, behind Zambia and Nigeria. This is the third time that Cameroon have missed out on qualification for a World Cup since 1982.

Dismissal despite AFCON title

At the start of the year, Broos led Cameroon to an unexpected AFCON title in Gabon, defeating Egypt 2-1 in the final.

After this achievement, the Belgian was nominated for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Coach of the Year award, while several reports revealed that he turned down numerous job offers in order to stay with Cameroon.

“After the African Cup, I received offers from Ghana, South Africa, and Tunisia, and I also went to Egyptian top club Al Ahly,” said Broos.

Broos had been hoping for a contract extension in order to participate in the next AFCON, which will be held in June and July 2019 in Cameroon.

A replacement for Broos is yet to be announced.
