Ernesto Valverde has named a squad for the visit to Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey Round of 16, and the absentees are more noteworthy than the players that form the list.

Barcelona stalwarts rested

Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Andrés Iniesta have all been left out of the squad that will travel to Galicia. All three are undisputed starting players for the LaLiga leaders. Messi and Suárez have recently returned from holidays in South America, while Valverde is keeping Iniesta fresh for the league.

Gerard Deulofeu, Rafinha, and Arda Turan are also out, but that is a technical decision rather than a matter of squad rotation. For Deulofeu and Rafinha, it could suggest that they will leave the club imminently. The former has been linked with a move to Napoli or Inter in recent weeks.

Dembélé a New Years gift for Valverde

In positive news for the Camp Nou club, Ousmane Dembélé is back in the squad after 109 days out through injury. Carles Aleñá and José Arnaiz have been promoted from Barça B.

Barcelona squad to play Celta Vigo: Ter Stegen, Cillessen, Semedo, Piqué, Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Denis, Dembélé, Mascherano, Paulinho, Digne, Alba, André Goes, Aleix, Vermaelen, Aleñá, Iniesta.
