PSG-REAL MADRID
Emery warns Madrid: "We are much better prepared now"
Unai Emery spoke about the defeat to Barcelona last year and says his side are much better prepared to take on the big sides on the biggest days.
Unai Emery gave an interview to Jorge Valdano on Univero Valdano on BeIN Sports and addressed the upcoming game against Real Madrid during the wide-ranging chat that included talk about the defeat to Barcelona last year in the Camp Nou.
The economic power and the pressure: "It's an opportunity. When I heard the news first about interest from PSG in me....it was the team. I see it as an opportunity, a positive challenge, to enjoy on the way. You talk about the maximum objective, that is to be amongst the best teams in the world, at some point, to be the best team in the world and to continue being the best team in the world. I speak with the president a lot on the way about building, improving. We can't climb the stairs all at one. I am happy now that we are better prepared in the years ago. This club is going to be Champions in the Champions League, hopefully with me there."
Passion for the game: "When we played the last final of the Europa League, against Liverpool, in the first half, we were bad, we got into the dressing room and the only think I said was to imagine we were in the Sánchez Pizjuán. The team went out and it changed everything."
Leadership: "There are players that wear the flag of the team in their heart, they transmit it, they are the one who transmit what they have. Name on? Rakitic in Sevilla said to me at the start of the season that he wanted to be captain. Here, we have a great captain, Thiago Silva, who also feels like a father to his teammates and works like this in the dressing room. There are other who are without being communicative, transmit it on the field, like Neymar, he transmits magiv and the stadium lights up a lot more with this magic."
The evolution of PSG: "This was a big team with great players. We had wanted to take the step in bringing players that make the difference at the top, but there was already a great team with very big players. What we have done is to bring players like Mbappé, Neymar and Alves, each of them with their characteristics because Alves brings a huge winning mentality and a character that transmits every day that desire to win."
Mbappé: "That he is here is a priviledge for France and for Paris. I am on the bench and I enjoy him. When he decided to stay in Paris, he did it to make a career at a team where his development, hopefully, can see him be the best in the world. He is mature, with a tremendous personality. It's been a long time since I have seen a personality like this. First, we talked about him playing on the left, when Neymar came on the right or also in the centre as a striker. Deschamps puts him on the right and I said 'Madre Mia! He has two feet...He takes the ball and knows he has the capacity to radiate like something natural, he feels it because he has the conditions and the personality yo do it. He is 19 years old and has already demonstrated important talents. This player had to play in France!"
The elimination against Barcelona: "For me, it is an experience that you have to be positive, although in the moment it was very negative. I've seen the game, the players no. The 4-0 was spectacular. In the build-up, I said to them that the Camp Nou was going to be difficult because 90 minutes is very long. Also, I said it to the president After the game, they remembered that. This experience, you have to have it, but it hurts. I wanted to escape all of the places. I was walking around the halls of the Camp Nou for a half an hour and I don't know how many kicks I gave to the wall. This team is better prepared now though
Madrid, always dangerous: "We will play against the best team in the world, that have won three of the last four Champions League, regardless of how it is there now. We are better prepared. If you want to be champions, you have to live these situations because all of them have lived these."
Mbappé-Cavani-Neymar: "The biggest days are for the great specialists and the biggest geniuses. The 4-3-3 is the way we can be most competitive and to have possession and to apply staggered pressure."
