Gianluca Rocchi assigned to Real Madrid-PSG first leg
The Italian referee was in charge when Zinedine Zidane's side beat Manchester United in the European Super Cup last august.
Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi has been selected to officiate the opening leg of the Champions League tie between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in the Bernabéu on Wednesday.
The 44-year-old is a protégé of universally admired referee Pierluigi Collina and has been overseeing Champions League games since the 2010-11 season. He has already taken charge of a Madrid game this season, the European Super Cup victory over Manchester United in Skopje in August.
In total, Rocchi has refereed four Madrid fixtures. His most recent was the 5-2 victory over Apoel in the 2012-13 Champions League quarter-finals at the Bernabéu, his only previous match at Real’s home ground. He also oversaw the 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the 2013-14 group stage and the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Wolfsburg in the quarter-finals in 2015-16.
Rocchi has only taken charge of one PSG game, in 2008-09, a 3-1 Champions League group stage defeat by Schalke in Gelsenkirchen.
