Arsenal rejected "chubby" nine-year-old Harry Kane - Brady
The former Gunners academy chief explained in an interview the "mistake" the club made when discarding the Tottenham and England striker.
Harry Kane was nine years old when Arsenal decided he wasn’t going to make it and forced the young striker into the arms of arch-rivals Tottenham. The rest, as they say, is history.
Now 24, the Spurs and England striker is one of the best in the world in his position and beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi to the calendar year goals scored podium in 2017. As Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said recently: “It’s impossible to put a price tag on him.”
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Gunners great Liam Brady explained how Arsenal made possibly the biggest clanger in the club’s history when discarding Kane as a youngster.
"After Messi, Ronaldo and Lewandowski, there is Harry Kane"
“He was a bit chubby, he wasn’t very athletic but we made a mistake. But Tottenham sent him out on loan to lower-division clubs three or four times as well. But through his determination he has carved out an amazing career and he deserves it. He has a character that drives him to improve all the time. After Messi, Ronaldo and Lewandowski, there is Harry Kane. The statistics speak for themselves and he’s still only 24.”
Brady, who also played for Juventus, looked ahead to the Champions League meeting between the sides this week as well: “I am not convinced by Juve’s attack. We’ve seen the best of Gonzalo Higuaín and it’s difficult for him to make the difference in Europe: he’s too static. Dybala, who is a great talent, now isn’t the novelty he was last season. Opponents have got the measure of him now. To win in Europe Juve need more.”
