Spanish pools includes women's games to mark March 8
In a move to coincide with International Women's Day, the state-run Spanish Quiniela weekly pools coupon will feature Liga Iberdrola games.
The Spanish state-run pools, La Quiniela, has decided to mark International Women’s Day on March 8 by including games from the Liga Iberdrola women’s professional league on this weekend’s coupon.
La Quiniela, which works on a win-lose-draw system, will feature seven of the eight Liga Iberdrola fixtures on the weekend of 10-11 March in place of the usual quota of Segunda División games. Madrid CFF vs Valencia has been omitted due to its 10:45 kick-off time on Saturday.
Women's football on the rise in Spain
Women’s football first featured on La Quiniela in September 2017 with Atlético vs Athletic Bilbao taking the place of a Primera División game in the final “lucky 15” slot, where the correct score must be guessed as a form of tiebreaker.
The weekend is also noteworthy for Betis Femenino, who will play in the men’s senior side’s Benito Villamarín stadium for the first time.
Spanish league sides have increasingly been offering their stadiums for their club’s women’s teams, who usually play at the reserve team’s stadium. Athletic Bilbao Femenino have played at San Mamés as have Valencia at Mestalla and a game between Atlético and Barcelona at the Calderón last year attracted a crowd of just under 14,000.
