Alisson Becker, the AS Roma ‘keeper, allowed himself to accept a compliment in the form of rumours linking him to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid interest 'massages the ego'

“I’m happy to receive this recognition,” the 25-year-old told Globoesporte, “it says that I’m doing my work well, that they’re watching me, even more so when you hear Real Madrid mentioned.”

The Brazil international has enjoyed a fine season in Rome, provoking interest from the top clubs in Europe – Real Madrid included. “It massages the ego a little, that can’t be denied,” Alisson admitted. “It doesn’t affect my performance, I’m focused on the moment. But I’m pleased to have the recognition.”

Alisson was coy when asked about his plans. “I don’t like talking about my future. As is normal, I have my personal objectives and dreams, but I’m very focused.”

Roma prepared for Barcelona

It has not been straightforward for Alisson since arriving in the Italian capital from Internacional in 2016. “At one point they might have undervalued me in some way,” he said. “I had a difficult year when I didn’t play as much as I wanted.”

Roma will face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final, a challenge that Alisson feels the Serie A side will be ready to face. “We’re prepared,” he said, “We doing our work well and working hard.”

He is expected to start for the Seleçao in the World Cup in Russia, but faces a challenge for the No.1 spot from Manchester City’s Ederson.

“Guardiola really values him at Manchester City. He’s at a great level and that increases mine. Brazil is in good hands.”
