Barça: title-winners on 10 occasions away from home

Barcelona are chasing their 25th Liga title on Sunday night on Riazor, where a single point against Clarence Seedorf’s side will seal the trophy.

On 10 occasions in the club’s history, Barcelona have celebrated a Liga title away from home. The first was in the first-ever Spanish top-flight season in 1929, when they pipped Real Madrid to the inaugural title by beating Arenas de Guetxo 2-1 in the Ibaiondo stadium in the Basque Country.

Barça would have to wait until 1944-45 to win their next Liga, and after claiming the title away at Atlético’s old Metropolitano stadium it would not be until 1973-74 when a Johann Cruyff-led side would lift the title away from home again, this time in El Molinón where they crushed Sporting Gijón 5-1 to seal the championship with five games remaining.

In Zorrilla in 1984-85, Clos and Alexandro handed Terry Venables’ Barça a 2-1 victory in a game remembered for Urruti’s incredible penalty save from Mágico González, which turned the game against Valladolid and left Madrid and Atlético out of the running.

Louis van Gaal’s Barcelona won the Liga title in Mendizorrotza in 1998-99, with goals from Philipp Cocu, Patrick Kluivert, Luis Figo and Luis Enrique, confirming the Dutch manager’s second consecutive triumph.

Barça have won the title twice in the Ciutat de Valencia, in 2004-05 courtesy of a Samuel Eto’o goal and again in 2010-11, with Seydou Keita scoring in a 1-1 draw that signified another addition to the Camp Nou trophy cabinet. In between, Eto’o scored the only goal of the game in Balaídos in 2005-06 to land another title for Barça.

The two most recent away triumphs took place in the Calderón in 2014-15, when Barça took revenge on Atlético for securing the Liga title in Camp Nou a season earlier, and in 2015-16 when Luis Enrique’s side won the league in Granada’s Los Cármenes stadium.
