De Gea: "I never listen to the stupid things they say"
Ahead of Manchester United's Champions League game against Young Boys, their Spanish goalkeeper responded to questions about his critics.
Manchester United goalkeeper, David de Gea, begins his Champions League journey this evening with a trip to Switzerland to play Young Boys of Bern. The footballer is eager to play a major role in the top European club competition saying in the lead up to the game, “we want to improve in the Champions League, it's such a special competition. It's a long time for Manchester United not to win this cup so we are ready to do it."
Artificial problems
The Spanish goalkeeper believes that they have been put in "a difficult group" this season - along with Juventus, valencia as well as the Swiss side.
“We are in a difficult group, starting tomorrow with a difficult team. We want to start well, winning games and try to win the competition but we know it's always difficult to win.
Without disrespect to the set of players facing him at the Stade de Suisse on Wednesday, De Gea points to the playing surface as potentially the greatest problem for his team.
“We are not used to playing on artificial grass so it's going to be a bit different, and probably more difficult for us,” he explained. “But we have to train today to see how the balls work on this pitch and try to play our football here.”
De Gea ignores the critics
During the pre-match press conference, the 27-year old was also asked about the criticism that he has received in recent months, most specifically regarding his World Cup performances with Spain.
“Normally I never listen to the people who speak about me. I never listen to the stupid things they say", he shared.
"I focus on my job and focus on trying to help my team and trying to improve every training session and try to be as a good as I can.
Despite not having the best of times in Russia, like most of those involved with La Roja, De Gea has been chosen as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League in four of the last five seasons.
“I feel really loved by the fans and all the people who work for this club. I am really happy to play for this club, one of best clubs in world, so for me it's really good to be part of this club.”
