VAR turns Varane handball into penalty for Levante
Real Madrid conceded a penalty in the 12th minute when referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez’s original decision was overturned by the VAR.
Real Madrid were already losing 0-1 to Levante at the Bernabéu in match day 9 of LaLiga 2018/19 when Varane handled the ball to break up a Levante attack. Referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez gave a free-kick just outside the area, which Levante set up to take.
VAR changes Varane's handball to penalty
The referee though still had doubts and asked the VAR to check where the offence had occurred. The result: the free-kick was turned into a penalty with the referees in the video room adjudging the hand ball to have occurred inside the box.
The Bernabéu was left stunned as Roger grabbed the ball from where it was set up for the free-kick and ran to place it on the penalty spot, before then beating Courtois. 0-2 Levante and the home fans began to whistle.
Not Varane's day
The hand ball was the second disastrous incident for Varane in the match. He had been at fault for the first goal, when he let a long ball past him, which fell to Morales who finished well.
