The full back completed his first full training session on Thursday, while Marcelo and Varane, who participated in part of the session, are also close to a return.

After the perfect start to his time in the coach’s seat, Santiago Solari has yet another reason to smile as a number of players look set to return to the fold from injury.

In Thursday’s training session after the 5-0 defeat of Plzen in the Czech Republic, Solari welcomed back Dani Carvajal. The full back – who completed his first full training session with his teammates following his recovery from a muscular injury that had kept him out for seven games – now has two more sessions to get himself match fit for the trip to Celta Vigo on Sunday.

In Carvajal’s absence since the Champions League defeat in Monaco against CSKA, Álvaro Odriozola has stepped into his starting role, and it remains to be seen which player Solari will choose to start at right back against Celta on Sunday. He could opt to start with Odriozola instead of risking the returning Carvajal from the start.

Marcelo and Varane

Marcelo and Raphael Varane are also close to making their return and were able to participate in some of the lighter parts of the training session today that did not involve ball work.

However, the pair will not be ready for Sunday’s game in Vigo – meaning that Javi Sanchez will probably start in the centre of defence with captain Sergio Ramos, while Sergio Reguilónwho put in a fine display on Wednesday despite a bout of vomiting and diarrhoea the night before – will fill in at left back.
