Tata Martino named MLS Coach of the Year for 2018
The Argentinean gained 32.72% of the votes cast by players, sports media and Technical Directors from the 23 clubs. Bob Bradley finished second, Peter Vermes, third.
Atlanta United's Gerardo 'Tata' Martino has been named MLS Coach of the Year for 2018, the league announced today. The Argentinean, who has confected a style which combines experienced stars with talented young players, guided the Five Stripes through a brilliant campaign in which they secured a place in the Eastern Conference final against New York Red Bulls.
Unprecedented season
Atlanta also beat the previous record for victories in one season (20) with 21 wins in the current campaign. They equalled the record for the best figures during the regular season (W10 D5 L2) as well as the all-time points record (69). Atlanta have beaten all of the clubs in MLS this season.
Martino, who took the Atlanta job back on 27 September 2016, has taken the Five Stripes to the play-offs in two consecutive years. For gaining the maximum aggregate amount of points in 2017 and 2018, Atlanta have booked their place in the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League.
Bradley and Vermes complete the Top 3
The former Barcelona coach gained 32.72 per cent of the votes, which were compiled from three groups - active players in the league, members of the sports media and Technical Directors from the 23 clubs in tghe division. LAFC coach Bob Bradley finished second with 22.34 per cent of the votes, while Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes came third with 10.95%.
