Lin Tzu-chi: Former weightlifting world record holder banned for eight years for doping
The Taiwanese was initially banned for two years after testing positive for steroids in June 2016.
Former weightlifting world record holder Lin Tzu-chi has been banned for eight years for a doping offence by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the tribunal said in a statement on Thursday.
The 30-year-old Taiwanese broke two world records in the women’s 63kg category at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea.
She was initially banned for two years by Taiwan’s Olympic Committee after testing positive for steroids in 2016.
However, as it was Lin’s second violation (she had previously tested positive in 2010), the CAS upheld an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency and increased the ban.
"The sole arbitrator ... found that (Lin Tzu Chi) had indeed committed a second anti-doping rule violation and determined that she should receive an eight-year ban," the CAS said in a statement.
Lin’s former record
At the 2014 Asian Games, Lin hoisted 145kg with her final lift, adding 2kg to the previous record, giving her an overall total of 261kg, another world record.
However, at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, China’s Deng Wei overhauled those records, lifting 147kg in her final try and achieving an overall of 262kg.
Lin was suddenly withdrawn from the Olympic competition. It was later revealed that she had failed a doping test ahead of the Games.
