Barça to pay 40M euro 'objectives' fee in Dembélé sale

The Catalan club would need to cover Dortmund with a fee of approximately 40 million euros as stipulated in the player's original deal signed with the Bundesliga side.

German daily Die Welt confirm that Barcelona face a major obstacle in any effort to sell Ousmane Dembélé in the forthcoming winter transfer window. The Catalan club paid Borussia Dortmund a fee of 105 million euro for his services in 2017 but issues over the player's behaviour have had many at the club calling for the player to be offloaded.

Target clauses, based on objectives (goals, games played, titles...) in the player's deal which runs through to June 2022 may however raise doubts at Barça over a possible offload. A Dembélé deal before the 2022 contract expiry date would automatically trigger a payment of approximately 40 million euro to Borussia Dortmund as if the outlined objectives had been reached.

Premier League sides Liverpool and Arsenal are rumoured to be interested in the 21-year-old and were prepared to offer a fee of 60-65 million euro for the froward. Barcelona are apparently holding out in hoping to command a fee of 80 million euro for the erratic striker.

Dembélé has bagged six goals in the Spanish league this season for Barça but was left out of the last LaLiga squad call-up as the Catalan giants faced Betis at Camp Nou. Despite ongoing speculation about the player's disciplinary problems, news of the 40 million payment to Dortmund fee that a sale could command may influence Ernersto Valverde in having to offer the Frenchman an olive branch.
