River-Boca: Genoa offers itself up as Libertadores second leg venue

River Plate and Boca Juniors' Copa Libertadores final continues to throw up the unexpected.

Copa Libertadores to be decided at Luigi Ferraris?

After the tie's second leg was twice postponed at the weekend in the wake of an attack on the Boca team bus by River fans, it is still to be decided when and where the game will be held - and in a surprise move, the Italian city of Genoa has put itself forward as a potential venue.

Genoa council today contacted the teams and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) to formally offer up the Stadio Luigi Ferraris - home to the Serie A clubs Sampdoria and Genoa - as the stage for the rearranged clash.

Both River and Boca have Genovese roots

"We would be proud to welcome you to what, in a way, is your first home," Genoa's councillor for sport, Stefano Anzalone, said in a statement, in reference to the fact that both clubs have historical ties to the city, given that several of their founders were of Genovese heritage.

"It would be an opportunity to renew the deep sense of friendship that has historically united us," Anzalone added.
