FIFA Ethics Committee member Sundra Rajoo resigned on Wednesday, one week after being arrested in Malaysia for alleged corruption, the global football body announced.

Rajoo was appointed last year as one of the two deputy chairmen of the Ethics Committee’s adjudicatory chamber, which has slapped lifetime bans on several football executives, including FIFA’s former president Sepp Blatter and ex-UEFA president Michel Platini.

Last week he was arrested in an investigation of alleged financial wrongdoing while working as director of the Asian International Arbitration Center, a position he occupied before joining FIFA’s Ethics Committee.

The Malaysian was held overnight by the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission; however, he was released after a court accepted his lawyers’ arguments that he has diplomatic immunity due to his high-profile legal roles.

No further details given

FIFA said in a statement that it had “taken note of the resignation with immediate effect of Mr Sundra Rajoo as a deputy chairman of its adjudicatory chamber.”

It did not give further details of the investigation or the accusations against the Malaysian. The governing body said last week that Rajoo would not be involved in any ethics cases while he was under investigation.
