Real Madrid: Bale's goal gesture angers Atlético fans

The Wales forward scored his side's third in the Metropolitano and appeared to offer a riposte to a section of the home support who had been baiting him.

El corte de mangas de Bale en el 1-3 del Atlético-Real Madrid

Gareth Bale reached 100 goals for Real Madrid in his side’s 3-1 victory over Atlético on Saturday and the Welshman celebrated with a curious movement of his arms that some sections of the home support took to be a sort of middle finger in their direction.

After hammering a shot past Jan Oblak to seal victory for Madrid, Bale made a gesture that is common in the UK, bringing his left hand to rest on his right arm with the forearm extended, which essentially translates as “f**k off.”

No VAR in LaLiga for hand gestures

The Atlético fans nearest the Welshman took offence at the gesture and while it is unclear whether Bale was aiming it at the home support or if it was a private message, he is unlikely to face retrospective action.

UEFA is intending to use VAR to clamp down on such gestures in the Champions League, but at the moment in LaLiga there are no plans to use the technology in such a way.
