Poland's Szymon Marciniak has been appointed as the referee for Ajax and Real Madrid's Champions League last-16 first leg in Amsterdam on Wednesday.

Marciniak was referee for Madrid's Super Cup loss to Atlético

The 38-year-old, a FIFA international official since 2011, took charge of Madrid's 4-2 UEFA Super Cup defeat to Atlético Madrid in August, and last oversaw a Champions League game involving Los Blancos in the 2016/17 season, when the holders played out a 1-1 group-stage draw with Tottenham Hotspur at the Bernabéu.

Also the referee for Spain's 3-2 UEFA Nations League loss to England in October, Marciniak was handed four games in this season's Champions League group stage: AEK Athens 1-1 Videoton, Red Star 0-0 Napoli, Inter Milan 1-1 Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 Liverpool.

At last summer's World Cup in Russia, the Pole refereed two of the first round's most notable matches, Argentina 1-1 Iceland and Germany 2-1 Sweden, and took charge of three games at Euro 2016, including Spain's 1-0 group-stage win over the Czech Republic.

He also officiated Ajax's 2016/17 Europa League semi-final second leg against Lyon, which saw the Dutchmen reach the final in Solna - where they lost 2-0 to Manchester United - despite going down 3-1 on the night.

Mateu Lahoz to ref Spurs' first leg with Dortmund

Meanwhile, Tottenham's last-16 first leg at home to Borussia Dortmund, which also takes place on Wednesday, will be overseen by Spain's Antonio Mateu Lahoz.
