ATLÉTICO-VILLARREAL

Simeone: "We didn't know if we should celebrate Morata's goal"

The Atlético boss had a chuckle at the expense of VAR after his side's 2-0 win over Villarreal and said of "huevos" chants: "The team really responded to that."

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone was satisfied with an all-round performance from his side in their 2-0 victory over Villarreal on Sunday, which capped a fine week for the Argentinean after the Rojiblancos’ success over Juventus last Wednesday and a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rayo last weekend.

The three games this week were difficult and even more so with the added emotion from Wednesday,” Simeone told reporters after the game. “At the start of the match they had a chance that Oblak dealt with as he tends to do. Then we found our lines and Morata managed to score. We were happy about that. We didn’t know whether to bother celebrating or not though, as the other two he scored [against Real Madrid and Juventus] were ruled out even though they were valid.”

The Atlético boss also addressed the chants of “huevos” that did the rounds in the Metropolitano, in allusion to Simeone’s exuberant celebration of a goal against the Italian giants in the Champions League. “The team really responded to that gesture.”
