Celta to turn to Míchel as time runs out for Cardoso

Celta's defeat in Ipurua on Saturday is likely to signal the end of the Portuguese coach's tenure at Balaídos with the Galicians in 17th place in LaLiga.

Celta’s defeat at Eibar on Saturday is expected to see Miguel Cardoso ushered towards the Balaídos exit door with former Real Madrid midfielder Míchel being lined up to take over.

The Galicians are in serious trouble at the foot of the table where only three points separate 17th and 20th after Huesca’s victory over Sevilla removed a little more dirt from the tunnel of the great escape being mounted by the Aragonese side. Celta’s loss at Ipurua compounded a run of four games without a win and Cardoso’s record since he succeeded Antonio Mohamed in November reads played 15, won three, drawn two and lost 12.

The former Deportivo assistant coach hardly endeared himself to Celta fans when he mixed up the bitter rivals during his first press conference and a record of three wins in 14 Liga games – two of them against sides currently in the bottom three – is hardly the form to win a Balaídos reprieve. Celta had dropped from a high of third to 15th under Mohamed and have now sit just two points above Villarreal and Rayo.

Míchel expected back in the Liga game

Celta have reportedly been in talks with Míchel since before the weekend and have reached an agreement for the former Getafe, Sevilla, Olympiacos, Marseille and Málaga coach to succeed Cardoso.

It remains to be seen if Míchel is handed a contract or a remit to guide Celta to safety and then re-convene at the negotiating table in June.
