Parejo's January tweet goes viral after Real Madrid victory
The Valencia captain sent out a message to the fans via social media at the beginning of the year, and it has now been resurrected with pride.
"I refuse to give up..." That's how the tweet from Valencia captain Dani Parejo began. And the message to despairing fans was to get a new lease of life.
Valencia: a season of two halves
In January 2019, following the completion of the first round of fixtures in LaLiga Santander, Valencia sat in 11th place in the table, a full 20 points off Barcelona, who led the competition after matchday 19. The club's supporters were unhappy with what they had been seeing thus far, and Marcelino's future as manager was seriously being questioned.
However, despite their less than satisfactory results, on 13 January the team captain, Parejo, took to social media to make an appeal to all Valencia fans, stating firmly that he was not going to give up.
"I refuse to give up on the season in January. That does not fit with me nor the spirit of this team. There is still time and plenty desire to achieve our objectives. Nobody here surrenders. I believe in this team."
Following Valencia's win over Real Madrid on Wednesday evening, the tweet gathered serious momentum throughout the fanbase, with the club sitting just one point off fourth place, eyeing automatic qualification into next season's Champions League.
