Former Real Madrid midfielder and youth team coach Guti could be set for a return to Spanish football as manager of Segunda División side Almería.

The 42-year-old announced a week ago that he would not continue in his role as assistant coach at Besiktas, where he ended his playing career after leaving Real Madrid in 2010, despite having a year remaining on his contract at the Turkish giants.

Separately, Almería coach Fran Fernández has also decided to leave the club after seven years and Guti has emerged as the front-runner to take over at the Juegos del Mediterráneo stadium.

Almería currently sit 10th in Segunda, eight points off the playoff places with one game of the campaign remaining.

Among Guti’s managerial achievements was a domestic treble with Real Madrid’s under-19s in 2016-17, when he led the side to the league title and triumphed in both cup competitions. The former Spain international was briefly in the france to replace Julen Lopetegui at Real Madrid in a caretaker capacity when the coach's brief tenure ended last October.
