Michel Platini questioned over 2022 World Cup corruption probe

Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been detained in France as part of an investigation into the awarding of the FIFA 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

French daily Le Monde report that the 63-year-old has been taken to the premises of the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF).

Platini oversaw the UEFA presidency from 2007 through to 2015.

Qatar were named as the hosts of the World Cup in December 2010 but the designation of the Gulf state as 2022 hosts has been tainted with controversy.

The former French international was currently serving a 4 year ban served in 2015 for receiving a two million Swiss francs (1.5 M euro) as a ‘dishonest payment’ from FIFA in 2011.

Platini, who denied any wrongdoing at the time, was originally handed an eight-year suspension from all football activities but that was later reduced to four years and is due to expire this October. The Frenchman was banned alongside Sepp Blatter, the disgraced former FIFA president who was head of the world governing body for 17 years.
