USA set World Cup record in victorious campaign in France
The United States not only won their second straight World Cup - and fourth overall - but also set a new tournament scoring record.
The United States Women's National Team lifted the World Cup for the fourth time as they retained their title with final victory over the Netherlands on Sunday, and in the process set a new record, surpassing a mark that they used to share with Germany.
The Americans scored an unprecedented total of 26 goals in France, displaying their attacking prowess throughout the tournament.
The United States showed why they're the best team in the world right from the group stage, where Jill Ellis' side started their campaign with a 13-goal win in their opening game against Thailand, finishing the phase with 18 goals scored.
New World Cup record
In the 1991 World Cup, the US scored 25 goals, led by Michelle Akers, who scored a total of 10, followed by Carin Jennings with six.
In 2003, Germany equalled this record. The Europeans managed to defeat Sweden in the final and also scored a total of 25 goals in the tournament, Birgit Prinz bagging seven.
Now the United States leave France 2019 with 26 goals, with Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan top scorers with six each.
