Neymar facing disciplinary action for failing to show up on PSG's first day back

Paris Saint-Germain issued a statement this evening to confirm that Neymar had not turned up at the arranged time and added they will be taking appropriate measures.

Things seem to be going from bad to worse for Neymar, who will now face disciplinary action from Paris Saint-Germain as punishment for failing to report back for duty with the club at a time arranged with the rest of the first team squad. Players who had not been involved in the Copa América were due to show up at 8:30 this morning for the routine medical check-ups in Neuilly. Recent signings Pablo Sarabia, Ander Herrera and Mitchel Bakker all earnestly arrived for the first day of the pre-season this morning but there was no sign of Neymar.

Neymar's season came to an end on 6 June when he suffered ligament damage in his right ankle while on duty with Brazil at Copa América. He had been granted time off by PSG but coach Thomas Tuchel obviously still expected the player to show up on time for the first day back at work along with the rest of the squad. The French champions play their first friendly of the pre-season against Dynamo Dresden on 16 July.

PSG issued a statement this evening to confirm that Neymar had not turned up on time and went on to add that they will be taking disciplinary action.

This morning, Monday 8 July, Neymar da Silva Santos Junior was expected to report for professional activities with the rest of the Paris Saint-Germain squad.

Paris Saint-Germain found that the player Neymar Jr did not show up at the agreed time and place, without having received authorization from the club in advance.

Paris Saint-Germain regrets this situation and will be taking appropriate measures as a result.

Neymar's father responds

Almost immediately after PSG's statement, the player's father Neymar Sr spoke exclusively to Fox Sports Brasil to offer an explanation, saying that his sons absence "was agreed". He continued: "The reason why he was absent was already known, it been in his diary over a year ago and couldn't be changed. His first day back was arranged for the 15th. So there's no problem".
