Kevin Thelwell leaves Wolves to take on New York Red Bull post

Kevin Thelwell will start a new chapter in his career after 11 years at Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 46-year-old is set to take on a new job as New York Red Bull’s Head of Sports.

Thelwell joined Wolves in 2008 as Academy Manager and in 2016 he took on the role of Sporting Director. He turned the team a highly competitive one in the Premier League and made a number of shrewd signings.

Wolves confirmed the news on Twitter this morning, wishing Thelwell good luck in his new venture. Thelwell was partly responsible for the team's return to the Premier League in 2017. Wolves are currently the fifth in the table and one of the most impressive teams in the division.

One of the most successful  signings under Thelwell was Raul Jimenez. The Mexican striker joined Wolves on loan in 2018 and this year, the club decided to pay his 42 million dollar clause to keep him on a permanent deal. It's turned out to be another clever bit of business by the Midlanders.

Thelwell says his farewells

Thelwell had a few words to say about his time at Wolves and thanked everyone who works at the club. “When I first took over as sporting director, we were on the brink of being relegated to League One, and when I look at the progress made and where the club is today I am proud to have played my part. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at the club, and of course the fans, for making the club what it is today - I am sure there are many more great times ahead and I look forward to watching and supporting from a distance. It was always going to take something special for me to leave Wolves and I feel very lucky to have been offered such an exciting new challenge for both my family and I in the United States.”
