Matías Almeyda expects a 10 year contract with San Jose Earthquakes

Matías Almeyda is about to coach San Jose Earthquakes for a second season after arriving in the Major League Soccer in 2019. The former player was interviewed by the radio show Closs Continental where he expressed his desire to stay in the MLS for many years, “I have a contract with San Jose Earthquakes for three more years but I hope my bosses extend it to 10.”

He didn’t want to return to Mexico

Almeyda confessed that many teams in Mexico tried to lure him back this year but his intention is to stay with San Jose Earthquakes and win the MLS championship, “I had a couple of offers to return to Mexico but right now I am very focused with San Jose and I hope that I grow up alongside the league,” Almeyda said.

Bosses treat me very well

Almeyda also emphasized that he wants to stay in San Jose because he believes in the project and wants to make them an important team again, “My bosses treat me very well and I am happy here. The project is unbelievable and that is why I decided to come here in the first place. My bosses and I are on the same page, we are working with the youth teams and now the MLS is analyzing the possibility that in six months or a year each club must have a second division team.”

MLS has more exposure than Liga MX

The former River Plate player also admires how much the Major League Soccer is growing, “Nowadays I believe that MLS has more exposure than the Liga MX. The players that are coming to this league have more opportunities to go to Europe. The MLS is growing, which means that I have come to the right place. You can see that this year many important players from Europe and Mexico chose to come play here.”

San Jose Earthquakes has not won the MLS cup since 2003 and even though Almeyda does not promise to win the title this year he is happy with the players he has, “We are building a team and this year we have a better squad, we only signed Oswaldo Alanís for this campaign that is going to start next week.”
