FC Barcelona player ratings vs Real Madrid
The Catalan side enjoyed large spells of control in the first half but as admitted by coach Setien were overshadowed by Real Madrid in the second period.
Ter Stegen: Despite letting in two goals, the German stopper had an excellent performance with his stop from Isco in the second half being the pick of the bunch.
Semedo: The Portuguese defender did an admirable job of monitoring Vinicius for the bulk of the game but on the one time the Brazilian escaped from his watch, he struck to put Madrid ahead on the night.
Piqué: A fine display from the Catalan defender who was unfortunate to get a deflection which saw the Vinicius shot wrong foot and nestle in the back of the Barcelona net. Pique did have a great chance to strike for the visitors following a Messi assist but his effort was wayward.
Umtiti: A solid performance was only blotted by his failure to close down Mariano Diaz as the substitute, full of energy outpaced the French defender to seal the Real Madrid win in time added on.
Alba: The right back played despite not being totally fit and this became apparent in the second half where he failed to make his trademark marauding runs.
Sergio Busquets: A composed performance from the central player who provided a sublime assist for Messi and seemed to become somewhat overwhelmed in the second period.
Arthur: Despite delivering one of his best performances in recent times for the Catalan side. Had a decent one-on-one situation in the first half which Courtois did well to save. Subbed by Setien lat on which raised the brows of many Barça fans.
De Jong: Not a vintage evening for the young Dutchman playing in his second league Clasico. Shone in spells and then was out of the action for large spells despite a fine assist for Messi.
Arturo Vidal: A poor night for the Chilean with too many balls given away for a player of his experience and class. Failed to gel with De Jong and was the first change of the night for Quique Setién.
Messi: A night the Argentine player will be disappointed with after failing to beat Belgian stopper Courtois the two chances that came his way. If Messi fails to hit the target, it's likely that Barcelona's scoring tally will also suffer.
Griezmann: The French striker had a game of two halves, offering much and threatening in the first 45' but drifted in the second period and was subbed by Setien in the final stages of the game.
Subs:
Braithwaite: The Danish international was immediately involved in the action in the second half and saw his goal bound effort thwarted by Courtois.
Ansu Fati: The teenager had limited time to impose himself on the action.
Rakitic: An 81st change for Brazilian Arthur who lacked the time to impose himself on proceedings.
