The coronavirus has its point of origin in Wuhan, China. That is where this pandemic began to emerge, with question marks over actual numbers there, and we have since seen it spread throughout the rest of the world, putting many cities and countries on lockdown. But as restrictions are slowly lifted in China, there is more positive news emanating from there regarding a vaccine.

Coronavirus vaccine: human trials begin

The number of cases of infection continues to fall in China and the number of people being discharged from hospital grows. There is still a concern from the Chinese government of new cases being imported, however.

And despite the improvement in their situation, scientists from the Asian country continue their work to find a workable vaccine against the disease, one that can prevent new infections from occurring. And this has led to China's first vaccine against Covid-19 undergoing clinical trials, as was announced on Tuesday by the Chinese embassy in Spain.

Getting a vaccine approved is not a quick process - check out our guide here - but the test in Wuhan already has 5,000 people registered, 108 of whom were selected to participate in this first phase. The participants will spend a period in quarantine, where they have to report their situation to the scientists, and they will follow guidelines about how to communicate this through WhatsApp groups.

Chen Wei, principal scientist of the vaccine and a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, spoke about the process.

“if the initial results show that the vaccine is safe, and it produces the desired effects, and assuming the pandemic continues to grow, we will test its effectiveness overseas through international cooperation.

"If it is effective, it can end the pandemic”.

"Total victory arrives with the vaccine"

Finding a workable vaccine is the great objective of every country around the world in the fight against this pandemic, knowing that even once this wave has passed, another is likely not far away. The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, has repeated on several occasions that ”the total victory will be when we get the coronavirus vaccine."
