So far 30 states have extended their statewide school closures through the remainder of the school year, 27 of them by formal mandate, with 3 more recommending their schools to remain closed until at least summer. The rest of the states are still deciding where or not to extend the closure.

States like Maryland, Washington and Pennsylvania appear to be preparing for the possibility of closures extending beyond the spring season. Due to the fact that Maryland saw its largest spike in new coronavirus cases on Wednesday with more than 1,000 new confirmed infections, the state's Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon said schools need to remain closed into fall or even winter.

Pennsylvania’s schools are officially closed through the end of the school year, but also indefinitely and any reopening will depend on positive action from the state’s Gov. Tom Wolf.

As of April 17, Maryland is the only state that has a closure order that’s still set to expire on April 24. Ten states’ orders currently have schools resuming normal operations May1. Two states orders expire May 4 and four expire May15. One expires May 20 and another one expires at the end of May.

  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds closed schools in her state through the remainder of the school year. The previous closure order was set to expire April 30.
  • New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu ordered schools in his state to remain closed through the end of the school year. Schools had been slated to reopen May 4.
  • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott extended school closures through the remainder of the school year. That state's closures had been set to expire May 4.
  • Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is extending school closures to the end of the year. Previous closures in that state had been set to expire March 30, April 7 and April 30. The formal announcement is expected today.
  • Two more states are expected to announce updates to closure-related guidance today.
