Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the president of Bayern Munich, said in an interview with TZ, that he would like the Bundesliga to be the first competition to return after the complete collapse of European football due to the coronavirus.

"If we restart the competition," he said. "It would be a sign to the rest of the world as to how our policy worked."

Rummenigge says football will have to abide by all of the rules put in place in an effort to overcome the dangers it faces. "It's obvious that football has to accomplish all of the measures put in place. We want to comply and we will comply with our responsibility," he said.

A decision is expected next week from Angela Merkel as the country slowly starts to lift lock-down measures.

The decision to restart football has been met with criticism. Rummenigge says they were ready for it. "From the start, when we started to plot a route back to football with politicians and doctors, we were sure we weren't going to be applauded," he said.

"We aren't asking for privilege," he said. "Professional football is a profession and by complying with certain guidelines, we want to be sure we can practice is again."
