According to the latest figures published by Johns Hopkins University,8,449,983 cases have been detected worldwide, with 452,465 deaths and 4,133,595 people have recovered.

In India, there have been 366,946 cases confirmed, 12,237 people have died and 194,325 people have recovered from the virus.

Five of the 20 soldiers who died in Ladakh have been laid to rest

Five of the 20 Indian soldiers, including a colonel, who died fighting Chinese troops in Ladakh, were laid to rest at their native places on Thursday amid patriotic slogans, gun salutes and barely held back tears.

The bodies of the other soldiers are being taken to their villages and it is expected that their last rites will be performed on Friday with full military honours.

Punjab finalises Covid-19 response plan

The Punjab government has set out a ‘City Preparedness Plan’ to ramp up its efforts to curtail the spread of Covid-19 in urban slums of five districts where maximum cases of the disease have been reported.

State health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu said more than 54% of Covid-19 cases were reported in Amritsar, Ludhiana Jalandhar, Mohali and Patiala districts. “To take quick action to control the virus in specific areas, a sub-panel of the district disaster management committee will now include the community medicine faculty from medical colleges, World Health Organisation (WHO), National Polio Surveillance Project (NPSP) staff and a prominent NGO,” he said.

Relative dies during cremation of 68-yr-old covid victim in Jammu

A 50-year-old man, who had attended the cremation of a 68-year-old relative and Covid-19 victim, collapsed in Tawi river in Sidhra area and died, on Thursday, The Hindustan Times reports.

The man was a nephew of the deceased, who had died late on Wednesday at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu.

Fitch cuts India's outlook to 'negative'

(Reuters) Ratings agency Fitch cut its outlook for India to "negative" from "stable" on Thursday, saying that the coronavirus outbreak had an unfavourable impact on the economy.

"The coronavirus pandemic has significantly weakened India's growth outlook for this year and exposed the challenges associated with a high public-debt burden," Fitch said in a statement.

It maintained its rating for India at 'BBB-'.

A Bench led by Justice Ashok Bhushan also urged the Centre and States to devise a mechanism to protect patients from being fleeced by private ambulance services.

“You must have a cap on these exorbitant rates that ambulances are charging,” Justice M.R. Shah, on the Bench, addressed the government side.

“I used to cook fish meals for tourists. It could be any number of meals and we cooked for orders. Now, that is gone. So we sell fresh fish. Every now and then, there will be a stray buyer from the local village,” says one resident of the area.
