REAL MADRID

€50m on the line for Real Madrid in the Champions League

Overcoming Manchester City in the round of 16 is imperative for the LaLiga side as they aim to cover some of the economic losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year the Champions League for Real Madrid is more important than ever with success in Europe's most prestigious club competition not only delivering sporting glory but also providing a vital economic injection, badly needed after the issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Reports suggest that the club has missed out on at least 180 million euros of income that is normally generated through match-day revenue, official merchandise sales and the Bernabéu tour whch is one of the most popular tourist experiences in Spain. The club are also set to lose out financially with no lucrative pre-season summer tour lined up ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Overcoming Manchester City in August is pivotal in setting the club up with the chance to progress and potentially secure up to 50 million euros in badly needed revenue in the form of UEFA prize money.

Cifras en millones de euros.

Con el dinero no asignado en los empates se hace una bolsa y se reparte entre los equipos en proporción a su número de victorias.

Progressing to the quarter-final stage alone would see Madrid collect 10.5 million euros and should Zidane's men make it to the semi-final stage, that would be worth an additional 12 million euros. Winning the 'final eight' format in Lisbon in August would see the victorious side bag 19 million with the runners-up claiming prize money of 15 million. Triumph in the Champions League also allows the winners a place in the UEFA Super Cup final and this also equates to another potential 4.5 million euros in prize money.

The Bernabéu side could also boost their finances by progressing in the competition with almost three million euros of television market pool money at stake. This is a pool of money which is divided by competing sides in the UEFA competitions and is paid out on a pro-rata basis of games played in a particular competition.
