India replaces the UK with fourth-highest Covid-19 fatalities

Reaching a new grim milestone, India now has the fourth-highest Covid-19-related deaths behind the US, Brazil, and Mexico, as 1,007 new deaths were reported on Friday

Following the reporting of 1,007 new Covid-19 deaths on Friday, India has replaced the UK in fourth place among nations with the highest number of fatalities from the virus. After this recent increase, India's Covid-19 death toll (as of Friday) has surged to 49,036 at a time when the death toll in the UK stood at 41,358.

India's unwanted climb up the Covid-19 table

India's confirmed number of cases has recently exceeded 2.4 million, as more than 64,000 fresh cases were reported over the span of 24 hours. This was despite the restrictive measures imposed in many of the states struggling with the rapid spread of the infection, as many states decided to extend or re-impose complete lockdown.

Maharashtra remains the state with the highest reported fatalities in India, as more than 19,400 deaths were reported by this state, followed by Tamil Nadu, which has reported over 5,514 fatalities so far.

The pandemic has only hit three nations harder than India, as fatalities in the US reached 168,446, Brazil has reported 105,490 deaths, while Mexico comes third as it has witnessed 55,908 fatalities.

On the other hand, the Indian Health Minister is putting all the efforts in a bid to contain the virus' uncontrollable spread through continuous mass testing, as the ministry stated that 800,000 Covid-19 tests were conducted in a single-day. Some experts, however, believe this number is not enough given the immense population of the country.
