Sergio Ramos: "Messi has earned the right to decide his future"
THOMAS KIENZLEAFP

Sergio Ramos spoke in the protocol pre-match press conference ahead of Spain's opening game in the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League as 'La Roja' face Germany in Stuttgart (20:45 start on 3 September).

How has it been working with Luis Enrique again?

It's wonderful to have him back as he is a fine coach. He'll certainly get the best out of us and after the sad situation with his family we're really pleased to have him back.

What's your view on what is happening with Leo Messi?

It's something that we're not focused on but the player has earned the right to be able to decide on his future. Having said that, for the Spanish game and for Barça and for the rest of us, we'd like him to stay as we always want the best around.

What's the latest with your renewal with Real Madrid?

It's something that we have yet to address but something that neither I or those at the club are anxious about. I've spent years with Real Madrid and never really contemplated leaving and am confident that we'll reach a mutually suitable arrangement. My focus is now on preparing for a solid season ahead.

Are you still contemplating on participating at the Olympics ?

I'm looking at taking things one game at a time and we'll have to wait and see. This is set to be one of the most complex seasons with games set to be played every three days due to the tight schedule

Do you see yourself sitting out certain games with the congested fixture list?

Every time Spain plays, it affords me the chance to represent my country and I'll try and give my all in each game. There may be times when some rotation may be needed especially after coming back from injury but to be called up by Spain is a privilege every time.
