Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, according to The Athletic.

The fee is believed to be in the region of €30m. Talks have advanced between the two clubs since Monday, with Bayern officials making it clear they wanted to finalise the sale before the start of the 2020-21 Bundesliga season.

Linked with move to Manchester United

The 29-year-old has also been linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks. Speaking exclusively to Sport1, former Bayern Munich president and current member of the supervisory board Uli Hoeneß revealed that the Bundesliga club offered the former Barcelona midfielder a new four-year contract.

We offered him a great four-year contract but in the last minute he changed his mind and told us that he wants a new challenge. He probably has an agreement with Liverpool or Manchester United, or with both,” said Hoeneß.

“Both clubs did not come to us with an offer. They are bluffing and likely waiting until the last week of the window to make a cheap offer. Bayern must decide whether they want to play this game or stand their ground and keep Thiago."

Won it all at Bayern

Thiago has still to agree personal terms with the Merseyside club. Bayern believe that his decision to leave is not financially driven. Head coach Hansi Flick tried to change his mind but Bayern's Champions League win only reinforced the sense that he had achieved everything with the German giants.
