Barcelona vs Villarreal: LaLiga match preview

Ronald Koeman takes charge of his first LaLiga game as Barcelona head coach on Sunday night, as the Blaugrana get their 2020/21 campaign underway by hosting Unai Emery’s Villarreal.

Barça’s league season is starting two weeks late due to their August involvement in the Champions League - a bid for European glory that ended in ignominy, as an 8-2 quarter-final thumping by Bayern Munich led to Quique Setién’s sacking as boss, and prompted a fed-up Lionel Messi to try - and fail - to leave the Camp Nou.

Much to Messi's chagrin, among the players who have departed is Luis Suárez: having been told by Koeman that he was surplus to requirements, the striker completed a free transfer to LaLiga rivals Atlético Madrid this week, bringing to a close a six-year spell in Catalonia that saw the Uruguayan become the club’s third-highest all-time goalscorer.

Villarreal, who replaced head coach Javi Calleja with former Arsenal boss Emery in July, have added promisingly to their squad this summer - most notably in midfield, where they have brought in Francis Coquelin and Dani Parejo from nearby Valencia, and lured talented youngster Takefusa Kubo on a year-long loan from Real Madrid.

Although they began their LaLiga season with an underwhelming draw with newly-promoted Huesca, the Submarino Amarillo picked up their first three points of 2020/21 last time out, goals by Gerard Moreno and ex-Barça man Paco Alcácer earning them a 2-1 win over Eibar.
