Club América and Pumas tied in the ‘Clásico Capitalino’
City rivals Club América and Pumas saw out a 2-2 draw on matchday 13 of the 2020 Guardianes tournament at the Azteca stadium.
A thriller of a game was seen on matchday 13 between Club América and Pumas UNAM at the Azteca stadium. The city rivals left everything on the field and at the end of the 90 minutes both teams returned home with one point with 4 weeks left of the 2020 Guardianes tournament.
América had to come from behind
The game started with the Pumas wanting to make an early statement that they had come to the Azteca stadium to win the game. The first goal of the game was scored by the visiting team with Juan Pablo Vigón's strike in the 28th minute.
The home team needed to reply quickly and they did. During the 39th minute, Nicolas Benedetti received the ball inside the box and the Colombian striker didn’t miss the occasion to tie the game before the end of the first half.
The second half started the same way the first did with Pumas going full attack during the first 15 minutes. At the 55th minute Juan Iturbe celebrated the Puma's second goal in the empty stadium and it looked like the one that would give them the three points.
VAR makes decisive call
Club América wanted the draw and they decided to push forward towards the end of the game. Leonardo Suárez took a free kick outside the box and Andrés Iniestra, who was part of the wall, touched the ball with his hand, leading to VAR to awarding the home side a penalty with 10 minutes left of the game.
Iniestra was given a second yellow card, leaving Pumas with 10 players. Federico Viñas didn’t miss the opportunity and scored the penalty kick to tie the game. After 90 minutes both teams had left everything on the field and they will have some time to prepare for the next matchday as they enter the FIFA international break this coming week.
