Sergiño Dest makes historic debut with Barcelona
On 4 October, Sergiño Dest became the first United States footballer to play for Barcelona after coming on in the second half to replace the injured Jordi Alba.
Just a few days ago Sergiño Dest completed his move to FC Barcelona. The Catalan club paid 25 million euros for the 19-year-old who had a fantastic season with Ajax last year.
Historic debut
On Sunday 4 October history was made when Sergiño Dest became the first United States player to appear for Barcelona in LaLiga. Dest came on in the second half, replacing the injured Jordi Alba in Barcelona's 1-1 draw with Sevilla.
Even though he couldn’t make a direct impact on the game or the result, Dest enjoyed a 100% passing rate and created an occasion for Lionel Messi in the 81st minute that was blocked by Sevilla’s goalkeeper.
“He is a young player with a lot of confidence, despite only being here for three days. It is positive that he’s like that. We are really happy and he can play on the right or left side,” said Koeman on Dest’s debut.
Jordi Alba has been the starting left back for FC Barcelona for several years and Sergiño Dest had a break through season with Ajax playing as a right back. After the game he was asked about debuting on that position and he said that didn't matter.
"I can play on either side, I don't mind. I the coach (Ronald Koeman) needs me on the left , there is no problem," he said.
