French hospitals will feel impact of accelerating infections in two weeks - minister

French hospitals cannot avoid the impact of the rapidly spreading coronavirus epidemic, the health minister said on Saturday. The spread of the virus in France has accelerated rapidly in recent weeks, with the total number of confirmed infections exceeding one million on Friday.

"The serious cases arriving in our hospitals today are the result of infections that happened 15 days ago," Health Minister Olivier Veran said after visiting a hospital in Marseille.

"Taking into account the spread of the epidemic today, we know that whatever we do, in 15 days we will see the consequences of these infections," he said.

Two weeks ago, France was registering about 20,000 new daily infections with about 20 people entering intensive care units per day. On Friday, 122 people were admitted to ICU. (Reuters)

White House says $12.2bn given to small businesses in North Carolina

As President Donald Trump hits the campaign trail in North Carolina, the Whites House has claimed that $12.2 billion in loans has been provided almost 130,000 small businesses in the state since the start of the pandemic.

During Thursday's final presidential debate between Trump and Biden, the president said he was against raising the federal minimum wage to $15, citing the damage it could cause to small business owners.

Biden, meanwhile, said he was is in favour of a $15 federal mininum wage, but argued that the government would have to bail out small businesses struggling because of the pandemic.

New Florida resident Trump casts presidential ballot for himself

US President Donald Trump voted in his new home state of Florida on Saturday, casting his ballot for his re-election at a public library across the street from one of his golf clubs. Trump, wearing a mask to prevent the spread of coronavirus, voted using a paper ballot. Supporters gathered in the library parking lot chanted 'four more years' as he voted inside.

"It was a very secure vote, much more secure than when you send in a ballot," Trump said, repeating unfounded allegations that mail-in voting is more susceptible to fraud. "I voted for a guy named Trump," he said.

Trump's stop at the voting location in West Palm Beach, Florida, was the first event in what will be a long day on the campaign trail with events in North Carolina, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Trump changed his residency from New York to Florida a year ago. In 2016, he and his wife, Melania, had voted at Public School 59 just a few blocks from Trump Tower in Manhattan. He voted by absentee ballot in the 2018 midterm elections, a White House spokesman said at the time. His vote in Florida, a swing state, is about 5 miles from the oceanfront Mar-a-Lago club that is now his residence. Trump had requested an absentee ballot but decided to vote in person.

"I like being able to vote. I’m old fashioned I guess," Trump told thousands on Friday at a rally at The Villages, Florida. (Reuters)

Why the Pennsylvania vote count might throw U.S. into political crisis

Here in the birthplace of American democracy, election officials are scrambling to prepare for a presidential vote they fear could plunge the nation into a historic political crisis.

Philadelphia’s Board of Elections plans to move its counting operations to a 125,000-square foot space in the city’s convention center. Dozens of staffers, feeding expensive new machines to open envelopes and process mail-in ballots, will spend days tallying hundreds of thousands of votes - under intense scrutiny from partisan observers. The workers likely will discard thousands of ballots that are not properly completed or do not arrive in a special “secrecy envelope.”

Outside, police officers redeployed from their neighborhood districts will conduct round-the-clock patrols to guard against violence among protesters.

IOC chief Bach says Olympic Games cannot be 'marketplace of demonstrations

'International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said the Olympic Games are not about politics and must guard against becoming a "marketplace of demonstrations".

Against the backdrop of the Black Lives Matter movement to protest racial injustice, calls have increased this year for a change to Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter, which bans any form political protest during the Games.

World Athletics chief Sebastian Coe said earlier this month he believes athletes should have the right to make gestures of political protest during the Games, contrary to official IOC policy.

"The Olympic Games are firstly about sport. The athletes personify the values of excellence, solidarity and peace," Bach wrote in The Guardian.

"They express this inclusiveness and mutual respect also by being politically neutral on the field of play and during the ceremonies. At times this focus on sport needs to be reconciled with the freedom of speech all athletes also enjoy at the Games.

Texas appeals court says state may not limit ballot drop-off sites

A Texas appeals court on Friday ruled the Republican governor cannot limit drop-off sites for mail ballots to one per county, a setback for U.S. President Donald Trump. Upholding a lower court decision, the appeals court ruled against Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The Texas 3rd Court of Appeals agreed with the lower court that limiting the number of drop boxes would increase the risk that voters could get infected with COVID-19, and would infringe on their right to vote.

Trump has repeatedly criticized mail-in ballots, claiming without evidence they would lead to widespread fraud. Trump, a Republican, faces Democrat Joe Biden in the race for the White House on Nov. 3.

Trump to vote in Florida before hitting campaign trail, Biden heads to Pennsylvania

President Donald Trump will vote in his adopted home of Florida before holding campaign rallies in three swing states on Saturday, joining more than 53 million Americans who have cast early ballots at a record-setting pace ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Trump will vote in person in West Palm Beach, near his Mar-a-Lago estate, after switching his permanent residence and voter registration last year from New York to Florida, a must-win battleground for his re-election bid.

Democratic rival Joe Biden and his wife Jill also will hit the campaign trail, traveling to the vital battleground of Pennsylvania for two events on Saturday. Former President Barack Obama will campaign in Florida, making his second campaign-trail appearance on behalf of his former vice president after a stop in Pennsylvania on Wednesday.

With 10 days to go in the campaign, about 53.5 million Americans already have cast early ballots, a pace that could lead to the highest voter turnout in more than a century, according to data from the U.S. Elections Project.
