Netherlands 1-1 Spain: results, summary and goals

Update:
AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS - NOVEMBER 11: Owen Wijndal of Netherlands battles for possession with Gerard Moreno of Spain during the international friendly match between Netherlands and Spain at Johan Cruijff Arena on November 11, 2020 in Amsterdam, Netherland

Netherlands vs Spain: as it happened

Sergio Ramos: Spain captain equals Buffon's caps record

SPAIN

Sergio Ramos: Spain captain equals Buffon's caps record

Ramos equals Buffon's caps record

Sergio Ramos has equalled Gianluigi Buffon's European caps record after making his 176th Spain appearance against the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

No added-on time tonight. It's game over. A 1-1 draw probably a fair result. Over the years, there haven't been many goals in this fixture and it was no different tonight. Definitely a good runout for Luis Enrique's men ahead of their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Switzerland and Germany.

Full-time: Netherlands 1-1 Spain

The referee blows up right on 90'

This one had a real friendly feel to it, plenty of changes, slow build up play. Still time for a winner...

90

Van de Beek thinks he's in a wrestling ring! Takes Olmo to the floor!

88

Babels shoots over! Corner Netherlands!

Sergio Ramos earns his 176th Spanish cap and equals the European record held by Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

85

Ramos comes in for Iñigo Martínez to earn his 176th cap!

Here comes Ramos!

Unai Simon comes and collects!

84

Dani Olmo picks up a yellow card for a foul. Deserved booking and free-kick to the Netherlands.

80

10 minutes to go in this game. Still 1-1

The very well-travelled Ryan Babel is on! Can he get a winner for the Dutch in Amsterdam?

79

Change for the Netherlands!

OFF Memphis Depay

ON Ryan Babel

78

Simon denies Depay, again! Easier save this time for the Athletic Club keeper.

76

Depay starts a move for the home side. Good pressure from Adama Traore forces the Dutch back. The sides are still tied at 1-1.

Sergio Ramos is warming up!

The Real Madrid defender will earn his 176th Spanish cap and equal the European record currently held by Italian keeper Buffon.

Marcos Llorente's fine form for Atletico Madrid has provided him with the chance to make his international debut for Spain.

72

Sub for Spain

OFF Sergio Canales

ON Marcos Llorente (debut)

Huge chance for Memphis Depay! He has to score from there, 6 yards out, excellent save from Simón to deny the Lyon striker.

De Jong

Frenkie de Jong turns Koke!

They will meet again in two weeks when Barcelona travel to take on Atletico Madrid in LaLiga.

66

Adama Traore with the effort! quite a weak shot from the Wolves winger - he'll be disappointed with that.

A good night for Sergio Canales

62

Enrique has taken off his entire forward line ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League games against Switzerland and Germany.

Morata, Asensio and Moreno all coming off

Three subs for Spain

Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo and Adama Traore coming in

60

How has he missed it? Koke is clean through on goal and sends his shot over Bizot's bar. Great chance to put La Roja ahead.

58

Nothing comes of the corner, well defended from the Dutch defence. Spain have subs warming up so we should see some changes very soon!

Very swift counter-attack from Spain. Corner to Spain!

57

Another chance for Spain and Asensio. Koke breaks down the right, finds Asensio at the back post, the Madrid forward strikes but it's blocks bravely.

Sergio Ramos will earn his 176th cap if he comes on tonight against the Netherlands, and draw level withlegendary keeper Gianluigi Buffon.

54

The Dutch are looking livelier since the break.

Could we see Sergio Ramos come on for his 176th cap?

52

Still just the one change for Spain, with Gaya going off injured in the first half. We can expect Luis Enrique to change things up as the second half progresses.

The home side have made three changes

OFF Hans Hateboer
ON Denzel Dumfries

OFF Frenkie de Jong
ON Stefan de Vrij

OFF Steven Berghuis
ON Calvin Stengs

Van de Beek scores his second senior goal for the Netherlands - a fine strike from inside the box. 1-1

47

Goooooooooooooool!

Van de Beek has the home side back in it!

46

We're underway for the second half at the Johan Cruyff Arena!

A Sergio Canales strike in the 19th minute has Luis Enrique's side ahead at the break. The Netherlands have failed to really test Unai Simón in the Spain goal.

Half-time: Netherlands 0-1 Spain

45

Two minutes added-on time!

45

Corner Spain!

Asensio down the left again, causing problems.

44

Spain defend well again from a wide attack. Over the years, this fixture hasn't produced many goals and I've a feeling tonight will be no different.

Other than that the Arsenal right-back has been pretty solid in his first start for four years!

42

Bellerin breaks through the midfield, has options either side but makes the wrong move and the Dutch clear it.

Depay fouls Rodri. Spain free-kick. Canales plays to Reguilon. Spain look to hold it for a the next couple of minutes before the break.

39

Veltman crosses, Reguilon clears. The ball goes out of play and now Spain build again from the back with Eric Garcia of Manchester City.

38

Corner to the home side...but the ball never went out!

34

Bizot saves from Morata! Really well worked move from La Roja, which results in a good left-footed strike from Morata.

The ref waves play on. Bellerin pushes De Jong, but the ref doesn't listen to the shouts. Still 1-0 to Spain.

33

Netherlands appeal for a penalty for a push in the box. Sevilla striker Luuk de Jong is not at all happy.

This game was originally scheduled for March but because of the coronavirus pandemic that hit the world, we are now playing it in November, eight months later.

30

Both sides have made a substitution each and are allowed to make up to six tonight.

29

Spain substitution

OFF Gaya

ON Reguilon

It looks like Gaya has come out the worst. Sergio Reguilon is warming up...

Medical staff are attending to both players

27

Clash of heads between Gaya and Hateboer - looks quite nasty and both players fall to the ground.

In the last five meetings between the sides, the Netherlands have won three and Spain have won two.

Tonight was Sergio Canales' first senior goal for Spain!

22

Spain definitely the stronger of the sides in the opening 20 minutes with control of the middle and threats out wide with Asensio and Moreno.

Morata finds Canales in the inside left channel and the Real Betis midfielder slides it home into the far corner to give Bizot no chance.

18

Gooooooooooooooool!!!

CANALES 1-0 to Spain

Koke clearing the danger from the Dutch. Alongside Rodri, Spain have plenty protection in front of their back four.

16

Enjoyable game so far! Both teams with similar mentalities, looking to play on the front foot and attack.

12

Super cross again from Marco Asensio. Alvaro Morata doesn't stoop low enough to catch the very low ball. Asensio looking a threat down the left. We normally see him on the right for Real Madrid.

10

10 minutes gone in Amsterdam and 10 years since Spain beat tonight's opponents in the 2010 World Cup final.

9

Gerard Moreno goes close for Spain. Nicely played through ball from Canales. Moreno sends it just over.

Luuk de Jong offside!

Spain are pressing very high here. Koke is tonight's captain, a player Luis Enrique described as a "10 out of 10 person" earlier this week.

6

First change of the game for the Netherlands

OFF Nathan Ake

ON Daley Blind

Looks like a hamstring injury for Ake.

5

Bizot catches Asensio's cross from the left. Nathan Ake falls to his feet and looks to have picked up an early knock.

3

Not even three minutes on the clock and Luis Enrique is up off his seat to give his men instructions.

Good start from Spain. They earn an early corner!

The Netherlands are playing from left to right as we watch it. Both sides are set up in a 4-3-3.

And we're underway!

Now we have the national anthems to come!

The players are coming out for the start of the game, kicking off in just 5 minutes! Stay with us for all the action live!

This is definitely one of the more high-profile friendlies of the week!

Both countries have plenty to offer, lots of attacking talent and some legends of the game.

We kick-off in 10 minutes!

Match facts!

The Netherlands haven't won in 4

Spain haven't won any of their last 5 games away from home

In the last 5 meetings between the countries, the Netherlands won 3, Spain 2

Netherlands vs Spain

Tonight's friendly was due to take place in March but was then postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The sides have history (2010 World Cup final), however, they have not met for five years and their last encounter was also a friendly, in 2015, which the Netherlands won 2-0 in Amsterdam.

Johan Cruyff Arena

The Spanish players checking out the fabulous Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam before kick-off. Kick-off tonight is at 20:45 CEST.

Ramos could equal Buffon's cap record

Sergio Ramos will earn his 176th cap should he play against the Netherlands and draw level with Gianluigi Buffon.

De Boer livid after Van Dijk injury

Frank de Boer "said bad words" upon seeing Virgil van Dijk suffer a serious injury in action for Liverpool, though he is far more relaxed about Donny van de Beek's situation at Manchester United.

Van Dijk's absence does not only impact Liverpool, it also affects the Netherlands, who could ultimately be without him for next year's delayed European Championship.

"I saw it live. I was shocked. I said some bad words," De Boer said on Tuesday ahead of a friendly against Spain on Wednesday.

"It was a shock, because he's such an important player, our captain, and he's so important in our squad. We will miss him."

Ansu Fati ruled out for up to four months after knee surgery

Spain head coach Luis Enrique backed Barcelona sensation Ansu Fati to pick up from where he left off once he has recovered from a knee injury.

Fati will spend four months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on a tear to the internal meniscus of his left knee – an injury sustained in Saturday's 5-2 LaLiga win over Real Betis.

Among a number of other records, he became the youngest ever scorer for Spain with his goal against Ukraine in September.

That was one of four caps earned under Luis Enrique and the former Barcelona coach is confident the teenage attacker will find his best form once he returns to action.

"Regardless of how old you are, injuries are part of football," Luis Enrique said at a news conference ahead of Wednesday's friendly with the Netherlands.

"It is a sad moment but he will overcome it. He will be the old Ansu again."

Asensio

Luis Enrique on Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio:

"I love Marco Asensio and for me he is at a good level, but still far from where I think he can be"

The former Espanyol player was called into Enrique's squad in place of the injured Ansu Fati.

International friendly

Spain take on the Netherlands in a repeat of the 2010 World Cup final on Wednesday night at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Luis Enrique's side suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Ukraine in the Nations League last month. The hosts have failed to win any of their last four matches in all competitions.
