América suffered a painful elimination against Chivas in the quarter-final series of the 2020 Guardianes tournament. In the first ‘Clásico Nacional’, Guadalajara beat ‘The Eagle’ at the Akron Stadium with the game ending 1-0 after 90 minutes. América would have another opportunity to seek revenge on Saturday at the Azteca stadium, but Chivas beat them again, this time 2-1, to advance to the semi-finals.

“It is a failure of a season”

After Saturday’s game the head coach of Club América, Miguel Herrera, talked about the two losses his team suffered. According to him every time the club doesn’t lift a trophy it is a failure and he even questioned if the bosses will part ways with him for the next tournament.

“An unfortunate game, when we were playing better, they counter attacked and scored two amazing goals. We had our chances, but we were unable to finish them. We were missing that spark that it takes to win these kinds of games. Chivas played well and we are out,” said Herrera.

I have always said it, if América doesn’t lift a trophy it is a failure of a season. If anyone wants to know if they will fire me, then ask the sporting director Santiago Baños, because he is the one that makes that decision.”

Herrera also talked about how hard this tournament was due to the coronavirus pandemic and even though they are eliminated from the Liga MX, América can still lift the CONCACAF Champions League Trophy this year.

“It was a tough season due to the pandemic, but that is not an excuse for what happened today (Saturday). The Concachampions is a different tournament and I repeat not winning the Liga MX title is a failure for América. Now we will approach the CONCACAF Champions League and we have the obligation to win that tournament, but it has nothing to do with the Liga MX,” he added.
